From August 12 through September 30, Summit Salon Academy Tampa is proud to name the HeartDance Foundation our Community Outreach of the Month. HeartDance is a Tampa-based nonprofit dedicated to ending human trafficking and restoring the lives of survivors, and over the next several weeks we are raising both funds and awareness on their behalf. We would love for you to be part of it.
Every guest who donates, whether it is $1, $5, or any custom amount, is automatically entered into a raffle for a $1,000 basket built in partnership with Sam Villa, L'Oréal, and SalonCentric. It is a beautiful collection of professional products and tools, and every single entry helps fund life-changing work right here in Tampa Bay.
The campaign kicks off at our monthly student celebration, where a HeartDance representative and a survivor she works with will speak directly to our students about trafficking awareness, warning signs, and the resources available to those who need them. It is a powerful reminder of why this work matters and how close it is to home.
HeartDance Foundation was founded in 2008 by Tampa advocate Dotti Groover-Skipper, after she encountered a 13-year-old girl being trafficked by her own grandmother while teaching a self-esteem class in one of Tampa Bay's most marginalized communities. That encounter set the course for her life's work: more than 40 years spent bringing human trafficking out of the shadows and into public awareness at the local, state, and national level.
Today, HeartDance is a faith-based 501(c)(3) that works on the front lines of exploitation, including outreach into strip clubs and other high-risk environments, to build trust with individuals who may not yet recognize themselves as victims and to help them build real safety plans to get out. Beyond direct outreach, HeartDance provides life-skills training, workforce development, and long-term restoration support for survivors recovering from sex trade and labor trafficking, alongside prevention education and legislative advocacy aimed at ending trafficking altogether.

As a beauty and wellness academy, we are training future professionals for an industry built on trust and closeness. Guests open up to their stylist, esthetician, nail tech, or massage therapist in ways they often do not with anyone else. The chair is one of the most personal, honest spaces a guest has in their week. That means our students and graduates are sometimes the first person to notice a warning sign, or the first person a guest, or someone that guest knows, chooses to confide in.
Partnering with HeartDance lets us give our students the language and the resources to respond well in those moments. It is also a way for us to give back directly, offering services that help survivors feel cared for, seen, and well, not just informed. This is what it looks like to build an industry, and a community, that shows up for people when it counts.
