In Florida, cosmetology programs require 1,200 clock hours, which typically takes 12 to 14 months to complete. Massage therapy programs require 500 clock hours, meaning you can be licensed and working in as little as 6 months.
If getting into the workforce quickly is a priority, massage therapy offers a faster route to licensure. If you are drawn to hair, color, and styling services, cosmetology is the longer but well-established path.
What You Will Do Every Day
Massage therapists work with clients on a physical wellness level: relieving muscle tension, supporting injury recovery, reducing stress, and improving overall well-being through skilled manual techniques. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes, and much of the work is conducted in quiet, focused environments.
Cosmetologists provide hair cutting, coloring, chemical services, and styling. The work environment is typically more social, with faster-paced client interactions.
