Top Five Tips for Passing Your State Board Exam

Cosmetology Blog: Five Tips to Pass Your State Board Exam

So you’ve spent the past year or more studying and practicing Cosmetology! And you made it! You have put in the hours, serviced many guests and most likely already have a position lined up at a beautiful salon or spa in the area.

There’s only one step left – your Cosmetology state board exam.

To help you find peace leading up to your test date, we have FIVE TIPS for passing your state board!

  1. Believe in Yourself!

This might seem obvious, but remember the old saying, whether you believe you can or you believe you can’t- you’re right. Practice imagining what it will look and feel like when you pass your state board. Where will you celebrate? Who will you call first?

Remember that you have ALL the knowledge that you need. You have literally devoted all of the time and energy that you have into learning this information over the past year.

AKA, you know what you’re doing!

  1. Recognize your Strengths!

When it comes to studying, you’re going to be tempted to focus on the information that you are GOOD at remembering and understanding.

However, press yourself to MOVE ON!

Once you master a certain area of knowledge- set it aside to go over at another time. Focus the majority of your energy on topics that are more foreign or frustrating to your mind.

  1. Make learning FUN!

The mind remembers CREATIVITY and story telling.

  • Create rhymes or acronyms to remember words that are medical and cold feeling.
  • Make up a story about different concepts that challenge you.
  • Meet up in study groups with friends from your class to go over different topics. Explain and teach concepts to each other to show your way of thinking about it. Seeing someone else’s point of view might help you better remember and learn something you otherwise wouldn’t have.

  1. Arrive early

Nothing is more likely to shut down your train of thought than STRESS. Eliminate as much stress as possible the day of your exam. Get up early and make sure that you are not rushing. Imagine making it to the testing center and having the time to review your notes one last time! Now that’s a breath of fresh air.

  1. Self care

Caring for your body and mind is a vital part of performing well at any difficult task. It may be tempting to drink alcohol the night before your exam but that temporary relaxation will only lead to dehydration and leave you feeling lethargic in the morning. Be sure to eat a healthy breakfast, drink plenty of water and get rest.

Most importantly, remember that it is only an exam. It in no way measures your self worth or capability of building a successful career in the professional beauty industry. If you need to take a re-take be kind to yourself and work with an educator on the areas that you missed. Believe me, it’s all going to be okay.
