As a new cosmetology student, I know what you’re thinking… how can I possibly put my guest at ease when I am SO NERVOUS?
The answer is, PRACTICE!
Anytime we do something for the first time we are going to feel VULNERABLE, UNEASY and downright SCARED. But I promise, with practice you will be able to channel that energy into beautiful creativity that will leave your guest feeling breathless every time.
Here are the top 3 ways to put your guest at ease:
The Devil is in the Details
- Keep a clean work station
- Dress professionally
These points may seem minor- but the good news is that if you can get these non-verbal forms of communication right, then you are already ON YOUR WAY to making your guest feel comfortable because they know that you take your career seriously.
- Guests name
- Guests issues
- Guests desired outcome
EVEN IF you don’t know what your vision is yet, EVEN IF you need to go speak with the educator to really map out a good plan, EVEN IF your hands are super sweaty, it is vital to be REPEATING back the guests name, their issues and their desired outcome. This will not only buy you time to really think, but you will automatically start relaxing them because they will feel HEARD.
Don’t be Afraid to be Quiet
Some people excel at doing two things at once, most people don’t when they are working on mastering a skill. A great way to set this up from the beginning is to say, “Just so you know, I am very focused while I’m working! I want to be sure this look comes out how you want. Is that okay?” They will ALWAYS SAY YES. Then you don’t have to feel awkward or distracted by small talk!
We believe in you!
